My latest painting

This is the painting that I decided to make. It's 3 feet across by 4 feet high. I have a thing for trees - they tend to show up in a lot of my paintings. Not sure of the significance - maybe I just like the almost-permanence of the huge tree we have in our backyard and the one by our old condo. The strength and grace of them. Or maybe it's the whole family-tree connection and symbolism that I like.

The counselor at my RE's clinic had suggested I think of a way to honor the embryos we had during our IVF cycles. I decided to paint something that would be a memory and a way for me to start moving on to whatever we decide to do next. I painted the background and tree last night. I made little bird templates and used them to creat a collage bird to represent the four embryos we had during IVf #1 and #2. Each of those little birds is looking to the left (I was thinking of it as the past.) My bird on the right is the only one that's flying. It's moving on from what's happened in our past and toward whatever is going to happen in our future.

I am happy with how it turned out.

The FIRST Tree Painting

Throw me somethin', Mister! Mardi Gras 2007

That's what you yell during Mardi Gras! DH and I caught 84 strands of beads as they were thrown from balconies and parade floats. I just thought I would throw this pic in because I think it's funny that we caught so many.

Why is Blue Dog Blue?

This is a photo of me in George Rodrigue's gallery in New Orleans. We went to New Orleans last year during Mardi Gras. Our hotel was on the same street as Rodrigue's gallery (Royale Street.) I LOVE Rodrigue's artwork; when I was student teaching, my cooperating teacher, Carol, had Blue Dog hung all over the classroom. Her love of Rodrigue's art really inspired me; now I have my own Blue Dogs hanging in my classroom. My students love him!

Cake Plate

This is a cake plate that I painted a few years ago. I didn't make the plate, but I painted it at a great pottery place called All Fired Up in Haddonfield, NJ. I think they are located in Collingswood, NJ, now.

My Art for Sale

This is a picture from 2 summers ago. My art was up for sale at a restaurant/bar in Detroit. This is one of the photos we took.

Still Life with Tea Cup

I painted this back in college. I think it was the first time that I was really able to make a piece of fabric look real. I like the shadow under the cloth.

One of my photos

I took this photo in our backyard. I'm not a great gardener. I'm really lucky that the former homeowner planted so many flowers. I do try, though. I took a lot of photos of our flowers the first year we lived here.

Nude

I painted and sculpted this particular model a lot in college. She sat for 3 paintings during my Painting 2 class and she also sat(stood) for my sculpture class. My friend bought this painting from me; she said she is helping add to our baby fund!

One of my many trees

I really like to paint trees. The theme comes up a lot in my art.

One of my favorite paintings

This is one of my favorite paintings. It's the same model as in one of my other posts. I'm really proud of it.

Night Sky

One of my coworkers bought this painting from me last year.

Handpainted Armoire

DH and I bought an armoire from a local antique store. I wanted an armoire but we really couldn't afford to buy the ones I really liked (You know, the kind you see in the catalog and $2000 later...) It just wasn't going to happen. So I had a vision when I saw this in the store. We bought it, I sanded it, I painted it, and then I added a little bee design. My plan is to use this in our nursery someday, but I will probably change the bee to a bird.

My first post on this blog

I love art. I love learning about it, creating it, and being inspired from things around me. I decided to make a blog full of things that I love and things that inspire me. Sort of a creativity blog!

This is a birdhouse I made for a raffle at my work (I teach art.) Each of the art teachers designed their own birdhouse and we raised money for the art department.
